Presentation: Fire Department Access with Demonstration

Engineers and architects are tasked with interpreting code requirements, amendments, and department policy in order to ensure the fire department has adequate apparatus and personnel access to a building when an emergency occurs.  This presentation will discuss the importance of building access, and the correlation between various code requirements and practical, real-world application by the fire department.   Presentation to include fire apparatus demonstration. (Pending weather and fire department availability). 

Guest Presenters: 

Michael Kirkpatrick is the Deputy Chief of Life Safety for West Metro Fire Rescue. In this position, he oversees the enforcement of the International Fire Code, the plan review process for new construction projects in the fire district, community outreach, and fire investigations. Deputy Chief Kirkpatrick has been with West Metro since 1995 and prior to his assignment in the life safety division, had extensive experience responding to emergencies as both an emergency vehicle operator and fire officer.  He has a degree in Fire service management and is certified as a paramedic and fire and explosive investigator. He is a member of the Fire Marshal's Association of Colorado, National Association of Fire Investigators, National Fire Protection Association, and Fire Service Intelligence Enterprise.

Kelly Brooks has over twenty-four years of combined volunteer and career fire service experience and serves as the current Fire Marshal for the West Metro Fire Protection District. In this capacity, Kelly functions as the Fire Code Official under the authority of the International Fire Code and oversees the application and enforcement of relevant fire and life safety codes and standards throughout the Fire District.  Kelly came to West Metro Fire Rescue in 2016 after previously serving as the Assistant Chief and Fire Marshal for the Wheat Ridge Fire Department.  Kelly has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in architecture and is a CPSE designated Fire Marshal, ICC Certified Fire Marshal & Certified Building Official, NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), Colorado State licensed architect, and NAFI Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator.  Kelly is on the Executive Board for the Fire Marshals Association of Colorado (FMAC) and serves, or has served, on a variety of boards, commissions, and committees with ICC, NFPA, and FMAC.
